Of course, it has a meaning in data protection, rooted in history and in the evolution of laws across the world, and influenced by several disciplines. Beyond that legal meaning, what fascinates me about this concept is its etymology and its roots. It comes from the Latin word cura, which means “care”. I think this aspect has significant societal implications. It makes me think of theories of care and collective care. And often makes me wonder: how would the world look if we interpreted accuracy as data “handled with care” for and towards individuals, groups, and society?
At the organizational level, a different kind of friction is emerging. AI Shaming: The Quiet Stigma of Using AI at Work surfaces a cultural gap between adoption and acceptance. Even as companies operationalize AI and tie it to productivity, individuals are yet uncertain about how its use is perceived. This hesitation is not trivial. It reflects a lack of standardized norms around authorship, accountability, and human oversight. As AI becomes embedded into everyday workflows, these cultural inconsistencies can translate into operational risk.
These signals are a structural shift in how AI must be managed.
First, governance is moving from policy to implementation. It is no longer enough to define principles. Systems should design with traceability, auditability, and contextual awareness from the start.
Second, trust is becoming an engineering outcome. It depends on data integrity, model behavior, and the ability to explain decisions under scrutiny.
Third, the human layer is emerging as a constraint. Adoption is not just about access to tools. It is about clarity on how those tools are used, evaluated, and integrated into decision-making processes.
For technology leaders, this reframes the challenge. Building AI systems is no longer just about performance or scale. It is about ensuring those systems operate within boundaries that are understood, measurable, and aligned with real-world impact.
Because as AI moves deeper into core operations, the question is no longer what the system can do. It is whether it can be trusted to do it consistently, transparently, and at scale.
